Accessibility

Many of our visitors are older adults. This site is built so that everyone can read it comfortably and use it with a mouse, keyboard, touch screen or screen reader.

Comfort settings

Press the Aa button at the top of any page to:

  • Make all text Large or Larger
  • Switch between light and dark colours, or follow your device
  • Turn on Calm mode, which stops animations, moving particles and smooth scrolling
  • Turn on Higher contrast for darker text and underlined links
  • Turn on Extra text spacing for more room between lines, words and letters
  • Underline all links so they're easy to spot
  • Have the page read aloud using your device's built-in voice

Your choices are remembered in your browser. If your device asks websites to reduce motion, Calm mode turns on automatically.

How the site is built

  • Body text starts at 18 pixels and uses Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed by the Braille Institute for readers with low vision.
  • Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline and a "Skip to main content" link.
  • Buttons and links are large enough to tap easily.
  • Images have text descriptions, and decorative animations are hidden from screen readers.
  • Forms explain errors in words, not just colour.
  • Moving content can be paused: the scrolling banner has a Pause button, and Calm mode stops everything.
  • On phones, a bar of quick actions stays at the bottom of the screen and never covers form fields.

Our goal

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We check every page with automated testing (axe-core) and keyboard-only use, in light and dark colours, and fix problems as we find them. We plan to add testing with screen-reader users.
